At its August regular meeting, the PCYC board of directors unanimously passed a resolution in favor of the establishment of a US Public Service Academy. The PCYC will now be added to the expanding list of non-profit and other organizations that join in this effort, widely supported by young people across the country.

The resolution can be read here.

The academy will operate in much the same way as the current service academies. In return for a free education, students will pledge to serve five years in the public sector. The proposal will combine the young generation's desire for citizen service with the growing need for qualified and competent public servants. More information can be found here.

At the regular August meeting, the leadership of the Pike County Youth Coalition launched "Operation 100." The goal of this initiative is to have 100 full dues-paying members of the PCYC by the end of the year. Each current member is asked to recruit one friend, doubling membership from where it is now at about 50. Operation 100 was celebrated with a delicious cake from Price Chopper.

A preliminary analysis of PCYC's survey on teen sexual activity, aimed at exploring solutions to decrease teen pregnancy and sexual transmitted diseases, is included in a white paper released at last week's school board meeting. The white paper can be viewed here.

The PCYC sent out a press release this afternoon about the survey, which can be viewed here.

A detailed paper on the topic will be completed and released by the end of the year. We also plan on presenting our findings in various community forums, including to the DVSD school board in the coming months.
