As a recent graduate, the news of almost 30 expulsions so far this past year has been quite
disturbing. I am not only concerned with the actions these students have committed to be
considered for expulsion but also the no tolerance policy that calls for the immediate
expulsion of theses students.
The pressing problem is that prescription drugs have become popular and entered circulation around and in the high school. I do not condone the use of any of these drugs and feel they can lead to the down fall of any school or community. But the answer to this problem is not expelling any first offense students caught with substances. While it is important to severely punish multiple time offenders, it is more harmful than helpful to expel just anyone caught with drugs. In the recent year, a high percent of the expelled students have been lower classmen, freshman and sophomores. These students should face punishment in the forms of suspensions and furthermore mandatory drug education classes not year long expulsion. They should, however, not be removed from the social school environment. Staying in school and becoming more involved in positive activities will help them kick the problem. It is imperative that students, especially young students, be given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and grow from them. Post by Eric Neumann |
